The true reflection

“If you find my stories dirty, the society you are living in is dirty. With my stories, I only expose the truth” by Manto reveals the reflection of society that medium of arts can imitate. We start every day of our life with a glance at mirror. The reason for this is not to acknowledge that we are gorgeous rather to experience the true sense of our soul. Mirror is one thing in the world that never lies as it just replicates reality even if it is sore, painful, shameful and ungraceful. This characteristic of mirror makes it the integral part of our culture and society. Arts is a mirror that reflects reality which we do not want to accept or want to run away from it.

Art is expression of feelings. The feelings are created from our experiences and perceptions. These experiences and perception are based on the culture and the society we live in thus enabling arts to reflect what we are taking in from the surroundings. The mockery is that we pretend to forget the harsh and painful side of the picture and signify only the cheerful part of the story. It is extremely important to keep on realizing people about the ignored reality for the development and improvement as a whole otherwise the neglected part is left behind giving birth to violence, disobedience, frustration and even revolutions. Theatre has been used for centuries to present the truth though painful in many civilizations. I am using example of theatre because it nearly covers all aspects of expressions. Theatre involves script, acting, direction, music and imagery. All these powerful flows of expression combine together on theatre to create a image that exists in our society but is hidden in corner or being made to hide. This illustrates the importance of institution of performing arts as it is not only a source of the entertainment but also a mirror to show us what we are.

The interesting fact is that theatre can be used to communicate a very strong and throbbing image in the softest sense as it is conceived as a source of entertainment. We should not criticize people like Manto who have perceived or experienced the reality which we have ignored as they are the ones making us aware of our own shadows. We can hide our shadows under the blanket of ignorance but should never forget the fact that they would never stop following us.
